WISE MEN

BIBLICAL DATA ON THE TERM "WISE MEN"

VOCABULARY CHANGES IN THE BIBLE

1Sa 9:9  (Beforetime in Israel, when a man went to enquire of God, thus he spake, Come, and let us go to the seer: for he that is now called a Prophet was beforetime called a Seer.)

Today, if someone uses the word "Seer", they are more often than not, referring to a "New Agey" psychic.  If they use the word "Prophet", they are usually referring to a Charismatic who "prophesies" in a Charismatic Church in some capacity, or, alternatively to that, a profound, prominant or significant religious leader (either negatively or positively), with a "prophetic message" (usually meaning challenging, confrontational or based on "Macro-societal" foresight).  You would be much more likely to hear Charismatic fundemantalist "Christians" use the term "Prophet" (thinking it "Biblical" usage), and either taken back, or even shocked by the term "Seer". (Despite both are Biblical terms used interchangeably)

But the "over-tones" of these words have changed meaning as a result of "association".  "Seer" would be much more controversial than "Prophet", despite 1 Sam. 9:9 make it clear both terms were used interchangeably.  But the term "Prophet" in our English usage carries a much broader, and thus more acceptable meaning, than the equally Biblical term "Seer".  Martin Luther King, Jr. has been called a "Prophet" quite acceptably, but rarely do you hear anyone refer to him as a "Seer".  And probably associating the term "Seer" with him, would be found "offensive" to some, who have no problem with the colloquial use of the word "Prophet" to refer to him.  But these current associations, have evolved in our culture, to mean the things they currently do.

When the KJV went to translate the term "Magoi" (which it probably should have simply transliterated), it chose the term "Wise men", rather than "Astrologers".  There is much controversy now over this term.  Below is a study covering the use of the term "Wise Men" and "Magoi" throughout the Bible.

RAB BI
G4461, ῥαββί, rhabbi, hrab-bee', Of Hebrew origin [H7227] with pronominal suffix; my master, that is, Rabbi, as an official title of honor: - Master, Rabbi.

H7227, רב, RAB, rab, By contraction from H7231; abundant (in quantity, size, age, number, rank, quality): - (in) abound (-undance, -ant, -antly), captain, elder, enough, exceedingly, full, great (-ly, man, one), increase, long (enough, [time]), (do, have) many (-ifold, things, a time), ([ship-]) master, mighty, more, (too, very) much, multiply (-tude), officer, often [-times], plenteous, populous, prince, process [of time], suffice (-ient).

H7231, רבב, RAB AB, raw-bab', A primitive root; properly to cast together (compare H7241), that is, increase, especially in number; also (as denominative from H7233) to multiply by the myriad: - increase, be many (-ifold), be more, multiply, ten thousands.

The word rabbi derives from the Semitic root R-B-B, in Hebrew script רַב rav, which in biblical Aramaic means ‘great’ in many senses, including "revered", but appears primarily as a prefix in construct forms.[3] Although the usage rabbim "many" (as 1 Kings 18:25, הָרַבִּים) "the majority, the multitude" occurs for the assembly of the community in the Dead Sea scrolls there is no evidence to support an association with the later title "Rabbi."[4] The root is cognate to Arabic ربّ rabb, meaning "lord" (generally used when talking about God, but also about temporal lords). As a sign of great respect, some great rabbis are simply called "The Rav". Rabbi is not an occupation found in the Torah (i.e. the Pentateuch) and ancient generations did not employ related titles such as Rabban, Ribbi, or Rab to describe either the Babylonian sages or the sages in Israel.[5] The titles "Rabban" and "Rabbi" are first mentioned in the Mishnah (c. 200 CE). The term was first used for Rabban Gamaliel the elder, Rabban Simeon his son, and Rabban Johanan ben Zakkai, all of whom were patriarchs or presidents of the Sanhedrin.[6] The title "Rabbi" occurs (in Greek transliteration ῥαββί rhabbi) in the books of Matthew, Mark and John in the New Testament, where it is used in reference to "Scribes and Pharisees" as well as to Jesus.[7][8] - RABBI, Wikipedia.org
